Diabetes and Heat Disease


Introduction
  1. Patient with diabetes has problem with the utilization of your body glucose either related to less production or increase resistance to Insulin (A chemical produced in your body).
  2. Patient with Diabetes has an increases risk of death as compared to patient with No diabetes.
  3. Patient with diabetes are two to four times more likely to have heart disease or a stroke than adults without diabetes.
Who are High Risk Patients?

The risk of heart disease goes significantly higher, if you have diabetes and following risk factors:

  1. Family history of heart disease
  2. Excessive body weight (Obese)
  3. High cholesterol levels
  4. High blood pressure
  5. Smoking
Sudden Cardiac Death in Diabetics
  1. Patients who have diabetes and is not well controlled and had previous heart attack, there is an increase in the risk of sudden cardiac death (Data from 2-studies)
  2. Diabetic patients frequently present with silent myocardial ischemia (heart attack without any chest pain)

Heart Failure in Diabetes
  1. Diabetes increases may cause heart failure, which may not be related to any blockages in the vessels of your heart OR high blood pressure. This is called “diabetic cardiomyopathy”.
  2. In patient with diabetes, The risk of heart failure, increase 2.4-fold in men and fivefold in women
  3. A scientific study has shown that patient with diabetes has an increased risk of death due to heart failure.

What to do (Management)
  1. Needs to control your blood sugar level and check HbA1C.
  2. Weight loss
  3. Take medications as prescribed.
  4. Needs to control cholesterol levels
  5. Stop smoking
  6. Research suggests that complications risks can be reduced by 50 % if:
    1. Blood pressure control < 130/80mmHg
    2. Total cholesterol < 170mg/dl and Triglycerides < 150mg/dl
